Episode 4 – Active Transportation as a Social Determinate of Health and Safety
USC PRC Co-Investigator, Dr. Andrew Kaczynski, sits down with Dr. Geoffrey Whitfield, PhD, Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity at Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The two speak about Dr. Whitfield’s work leading CDC’s Epidemiology and Surveillance Team in the Physical Activity and Health Branch. Dr. Whitfield gives Andy and listeners a quick overview of the teams within the branch and their work to encourage, monitor, and support environments for physical activity. Andy and Dr. Whitfield discuss the status of active transportation currently in the U.S. They also highlight communities working to improve their built environments to support accessible and safe active transportation. Dr. Whitfield also shares newer strategies to bring together transportation engineering and public health to create safer and more activity-friendly environments.

In this episode, Andy and Jen discuss the importance of understanding the impact of structural inequalities, historical perspectives, and their ties to racialized differences in active living and built environments. The duo also highlights the social cohesion and resilience that comes with fostering environmental justice and making active recreation and active transportation more feasible and equitable around the country.
