Research Brief and Infographic Highlights Connection between Physical Activity, Academic Achievement
“Regular participation in physical activity and higher levels of physical fitness have been linked to improved academic performance and brain functions, such as attention and memory,” according to a research review—and highlighted in an associated infographic—conducted by Active Living Research. The authors of the brief conclude that providing daily physical education to all students “is a justifiable use of valuable school time” given the demonstrated academic and health benefits.
‘F’ as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America’s Future 2011
Adult obesity rates increased in 16 states in the past year and did not decline in any state, according to F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America’s Future 2011, a report from the Trust for America’s Health (TFAH) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). Twelve states now have obesity rates above 30 percent. Four years ago, only one state was above 30 percent.
School Health Guidelines to Promote Healthy Eating and Physical Activity
Released by the CDCs Division of Adolescent and School Health, the Guidelines provide evidence-based recommendations for healthy eating and physical activity in schools. There are nine guidelines included in the report, and each is accompanied by suggestions for implementing the strategies, to help schools put these ideas into practice.
