The purpose of this study was to determine if participation in organized physical activities during early adolescence protects against declines in physical activity levels during adolescence. Adolescents aged 12 – 13 years provided data on the number and type of organized (extracurricular) physical activities they took part in at school and in their community every 3 months for 5 years. The authors concluded that although participation in organized physical activities during early adolescence is associated with more physical activity throughout secondary school, participation in such activities does not protect against declines in physical activity over time.
