Aim For A Healthy Weight

As a part of the NHLBI's Obesity Education Initiative (OEI), the Aim for a Healthy Weight Web Site provides information for patients, the public, and health professionals. Information for patients and the public include a Body Mass Index calculator, an interactive personalized menu planner, shopping ideas, recipes, dining out tips, and a guide to physical activity. Information for health professionals include online and point-of-care reference tools for download and use, including a treatment guidelines tool for the Palm OS.

America Outdoors

America Outdoors is an international non-profit association of outfitters, and their website houses a searchable database of adventure travel outfitters and recreation destinations throughout the US and the world.

BAM! Body and Mind

BAM! CDC's Office of Communication and the Information Resource Management Office recently launched BAM! for kids. Aimed at youth ages 9-13, BAM! was created to answer kids' questions on health issues and recommend ways to make their bodies and minds healthier, stronger, and safer. BAM! also provides middle school health and science teachers with interactive activities that are educational and fun.

Female Athlete, The

The Female Athlete is a commercial website selling female-specific athletic products. The website also has several free items of interest. The site provides information on female sports and celebrity statistics and interviews, and there are forums on current teams and sports topics. A unique feature is "Team Central," which provides free websites for young women's sports teams.

Fifty-Plus Fitness

The Fifty-plus Fitness organization has been in existence for 20 years and originated at Stanford University. The organization's website gives information about aging and exercise. It also includes information about ongoing lectures and activity events like walks and cycling events.

Fitness Jumpsite, The

The site encourages kids and their families to begin the process of adopting healthy lifestyles. This is the first component of ACTIVATE, an educational outreach program of the International Food Information Council (IFIC) Foundation.

Live Healthier, Live Longer

This National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute website is intended for heart disease patients and others with high cholesterol. "Live Healthier, Live Longer" provides information on dietary changes and physical activity.

National Institutes of Health - Exercise for Older Adults

This National Institue of Health site has excellent links to news articles and overviews of various topics relating to exercise and physical fitness. There are also great visual aids in the form of slide shows, and numerous other resources related to public heath for seniors.

Prevention's Healthy Ideas

The publishers of Prevention magazine have a web page that provides personalized information on health and fitness. It includes information on weight loss, fitness, healthy cooking, and family health. There is information about walking and place to sign up for a free newsletter.

Runners World On-Line

An extension of Runners World Monthly magazine (published by Rodale Press), Runners World On-line provides accessible and entertaining information on a variety of running topics. There are sections for beginners and women, and sections on nutrition and shoe selection.

Self Magazine

The Self Magazine website includes a section on fitness, health, and diet. It also includes workout slide shows.

Start!

Start! is the American Heart Association's national campaign that calls on all Americans and their employers to create a culture of physical activity and health to live longer, heart-healthy lives through walking. MyStart! Online features an exercise tracking tool, newsletters, recipes and more. Tools and programs for employers are also available.

VERB sites for tweens

VERB is a CDC youth media campaign that is aimed at encouraging positive physical activity among youth aged 9-13 (tweens). Starting in 2002, the campaign has used a variety of media channels and out-of-home outlets to communicate ideas for fun physical activities. The VERBnow.com website is for teens and offers many interactive features that will help them get active.

Workouts for Women

For about $4.50 a week, Workouts for Women provides home-based workouts every week, with descriptions of the exercises and video-taped demonstrations. The workouts are tailored to varying fitness levels. Participants fill out an Accountability Log and receive feedback every eight weeks. The fitness programs are designed by a personal trainer who is certified as an American College of Sports Medicine Health and Fitness Instructor and as an American Council on Exercise Personal Trainer. A "Stretch Library" of descriptions and video on a variety of stretching exercises is on the website at no charge.
