Staying Fit Over 40

PRODUCED BY: American College of Sports Medicine

TYPE OF MATERIAL: 10 page booklet

APPROPRIATE POPULATIONS: Multi-ethnic, Adults, Sedentary Individuals Initiating Exercise

READING LEVEL (SMOG): 13th Grade

PUBLICATION DATE: 2000

Comments:
This material promotes physical activity as a way to keep healthy while growing older. The material targets adults over the age of 40 who may be concerned about their health. The 13th grade reading level, which is slightly elevated due to the repeated use of the work exercise, and the smaller font size make this material more appropriate for individuals with a higher level of education and no vision problems. The illustrations and layout of the text compliment the physical activity message being promoted although the high reading level may hinder ones ability to simply scan the material to get the message. Overall, this material is unique in its focus on individuals over 40 who may be concerned about their health and potentially more receptive to becoming physical activity. In addition to the more general message of being regularly active, the material also addresses what it means to be physically fit, what age-related changes in health are modifiable with physical activity, and how to deal with potential aches and pains that may result from exercising.
